Administrative history
Landward Committees were established under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1894 to deal with issues relating to footpaths, allotments, well and harbours in areas where a Parish area include all or part of a Burgh. The only example in the Western Isles of this is the Parish of Stornoway in which the Burgh of Stornoway sat. The Committee consisted of the parish councillors but excluded those of the Burgh.
